In the afternoon of 24th, September during CHINA MINING Congress and Expo, in Meijing Convention and Exhibition Center of Tianjin, there is no extra seat in a big conference room with one hundred seats. Even the aisles are full with audiences. A very old man in a wheel was listening to a speech very carefully with an earphone. We have officials from the United Nations and leaders of mining resource departments of Canada, Ukraine, etc. This Mining Cooperation Forum and Chinese scholars, entrepreneurs and people working in financial fields.
Huang Jianhui, director of Research Institute of China Minsheng Bank said:” the theme of today’s forum is promoting mining cooperation around the globa, especially along the Belt and Road, providing new ideas for global mining development and promoting mutually beneficial cooperation.”
Scott Bailie Foster, Director, Sustainable Energy Division, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, said with great sincerity: “I came here because I thought Belt and Road Initiative is a great opportunity. We can use this platform to cooperate with China in many fields.”
Scott pointed out that our purpose is to promote coordinated cooperation and strengthen trade investment so as to achieve cross-border exchanges of products and services. From this point of view, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and China’s Belt and Road Initiative shared the same goal. Every country has its own development path, but each path is for the better life of people. There are a few regions that advocate trade protectionism. However, in the long term, we should oppose trade protectionism and different voices disrupting relations of supply and demand and encourage the strengthening of multilateral trade.
Georgii Rudko, Chairman of the State Commission on Mineral Resources, Ukraine, used a set of data to introduce Ukraine’s mining resources with great potential. He said: “Both Ukraine and China have a long history in mining exploitation. With rich experiences, they have broad space for cooperation. In mining technology, we hope to introduce China’s advanced experiences and technology.”
“With a vast territory, China is both a maritme and a continental state. Since Columbus discovered New World, the ocean plates have kept rising and the economic layout is along the coastline. In the continental civilization, the ancient silk road is the most developed, which was declining with the rise of ocean economy. China’s “The Belt and Road” initiative is actually for the purpose of rebalancing the mainland economy and ocean economy“, Zhang Weiwei, the member of the council of National high-end think-tank and professor of Fudan University discussed about “The Belt and Road initiative” in the current world pattern from the perspective of political science. He thought one important characteristic of civilizaiton in the formation of Chinese long history is inclusiveness, which is also the most important feature of “The Belt and Road Initiative”.
“Currently, China’s mining is at a crucial stage of supply-side structural reform. The industry is more integrated and there is an urgent need for transformation and upgrading. Rich resources along the Belt and Road can bring new opportunities for Chinese companies in terms of cross-border investment, production, trade, mergers and acquisitions and restructuring. In this process, professional financial institutions are needed to safeguard Chinese companies”, Ms. Li Tong, BOC International Holdings Limited(BOCI), thought deeply about how the financial world can promote”The Belt and Road Initiative.” She said: “We hope to use our professional advantages and cooperate with mining companies home and abroad and make relentless efforts for advancing “The Belt and Road” construction and the world mining transformation and sustainable development.”
Mr. Pierre·Akande, minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Quebec, Canada introduced Quebec’s “North Plan”, a very challenging program. Canada intends to achieve social, economic and environmental sustainable development through the coordinated development of economy, mining, energy, society, culture, tourism, etc. “This program has some similirities to China’s “The Belt and Road Initiative”. “There is no doubt this is a very good opportunity for the two countries. We are willing to cooperate with China to connect the “Belt and Road” initiative with ’North Plan’”, he said.
Ms. Maggie Huang, Deputy General Manager & Head of Corporate Development, Overseas Operations, Zijin Mining Co., Ltd. Said that “The Belt and Road Initiative” brought new opportunities for China’s mining and acted as a huge driving force for Chinese companies to go global.
With the help of “The Belt and Road Initiative”, the three-hour discussion in CHINA MiINING Congress and Expo gave us much enlightment about how to promote the global mining cooperation and construct the multilateral win-win outcome. (Reporter: Yang Xuan)
